CollegeWeekLive today and tomorrow

WPI is participating in CollegeWeekLive, an online college fair, today and tomorrow, March 25 and 26, from 12 noon – 11 p.m. If you don’t have the chance to make it to campus or just want to find out more information about WPI, head on over to http://www.collegeweeklive.com and check us out! We’ll have staff members and students available to chat live with you and answer any questions you have.

Decisions, decisions

This is the time of year that high school seniors are racing home to check their mailboxes every day looking for those college decision notifications.  Regular decision applicants to WPI should be getting that piece of mail from us within the next few days, if they haven’t already.  Keep an eye out!  We worked hard and made some tough decisions, and we’re proud of the strong quality of the applicant pool again this year.  Welcome to prospective members of the WPI community in the Class of 2012!

Green Monday

Green is in the air today.

Of course, it is St. Patrick’s Day. Worcester, Boston, and New England are always festive on and around St. Patrick’s Day with some of the longest running traditions in the country.

Here at WPI, we’re seeing green too. Members of the campus community were encouraged to wear green to support the new initiatives put forth by the President’s Task Force on Sustainability. The official launch of our Sustainability Web site today also coincides with the launch of expanded recycling programs across campus which include aluminum, glass, and plastic containers. The bookstore is running sales on recycled items and all green colored merchandise!

I am happy to see a commitment to these initiatives by the WPI administration, and I hope we’ll continue to expand and emphasize our commitment to sustainability.

President’s report

I came home today to find a large envelope in my mailbox from WPI. Inside I found a nice publication: the inaugural President’s Report entitled Character and Community. I am usually impressed with WPI publications, but I am often left unsatisfied after seeing them because I am on campus every day and typically have insight as to what is happening at the University. With the President’s Report, however, I don’t feel that way. I didn’t know of this publication in advance, and I found its material quite interesting. I assume it was sent to all alumni, and I hope they feel the same way.

The report discusses many of the great things happening at WPI.  There’s a section on the first year Great Problems Seminars, the 2007 first place Interactive Project completed in Namibia, and a featured alumnus who reflects on his WPI experiences.  A few students are profiled, there is a WPI highlights section, and a comprehensive breakdown of the finances of WPI is included as well.

If I can find an online version, I’ll post the link.

This month is flying!

I can’t believe it is already mid-March, I feel like this month is flying by! It continues to be very busy in the Admissions Office with a steady stream of visitors, application committee meetings, and the students back in classes. We’re nearing the end of the decision making period, so if you are a regular decision applicant, be sure to keep an eye on the mail in about two weeks. We’re very excited to finish up the application review process and begin welcoming members of the Class of 2012!

In like a lion

So it is March.  I had a few relaxing, fun, and (intentionally) unproductive days off.  But, that means March has come in like a lion for me.  It’s my first day back in the office, and I am still here at 10 p.m.  What’s keeping me so busy?  Well, mostly application review and preparations for this and next week’s committee meetings.  But on top of that, I’m preparing for the once-per-term meeting of the tour guides as well as the new tour guide training.  Oh, and I have a paper due for my class a week from today!
